Learning at Work Week: Premier Tech Aqua
Learning at Work Week is a unique annual event to build learning cultures at work. It aims to put a spotlight on the importance and benefits of continual learning and development.
Each year provides a new theme and this year, the focus is on ‘Shaping the Future’.
To showcase our support for this fantastic week-long campaign, we’d like you to meet Ewan Archer, our Engineering/Design Apprentice.
Full name: Ewan Archer
Job title: Engineering/Design Apprentice
When did you start your role at Premier Tech Aqua and how did you hear about the opportunity?
I started at Premier Tech Aqua Ltd UK in early September 2019 after speaking to one of the company’s representatives at a local college’s Apprentice Open Evening.
What does a standard day look like for you? What are your daily tasks?
Some of my daily standard duties include: carrying out the internal testing procedures for both PE (Polyethylene) and GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) structures, carrying out the calibration log to ensure our equipment is to the highest possible standard and carrying out health and safety audits of our offices and factory floor to help detect and prevent hazards.
What support do you receive in your role? Do you have a mentor?
As part of my role as an apprentice, I have a mentor who I can ask any questions regarding both the business or my college work, which allows me to receive any necessary help when required. I also work alongside a team of experienced engineers who are very helpful when discussing manufacturing processes and designs.
What do you enjoy most about working at Premier Tech Aqua?
The most enjoyable part of working at Premier Tech Aqua is the sense of teamwork amongst all areas of the business unit. No matter what the problem or situation, there is always somebody willing to lend a hand or give advice to help other team members with their daily duties.
What has been your most memorable moment so far in the workplace?
My most memorable moment of working at Premier Tech Aqua was when I received my very first individual project to run. This was a great feeling for me as it allowed me to work alongside lots of different departments during the planning and implementing stages and helped me to develop strong relationships with other team members that I would not have usually had the chance to work alongside.
What is your apprenticeship in and where do you go to study?
My apprenticeship is an EAL Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Engineering Technical Support. I attend East Durham College two days a week to study a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Manufacturing Engineering on a Monday and a Level 2 NVQ in Performing Engineering Operations on a Friday. I have also picked up my Functional Skills Level 2 ICT earlier this year through the college.
How are you finding your study experience so far? Do you think it helps having experience in the workplace?
I am really enjoying the balance between working at college and at Premier Tech, as I feel that with the knowledge I am gaining through receiving my ongoing qualifications, I can strive for our company’s goals of continuous improvement in all areas of the business. I think that having industry experience helps you when it comes to college work, as you can picture the theory that you are learning and relate it back to tasks that you have experience in.
What do you hope to achieve in the future? Do you know what you want to do when you complete your apprenticeship?
After completing my apprenticeship, I am hoping to complete my HNC in engineering with further aspirations of gaining my full degree in engineering from a local university. I am sure that once I have gained all these qualifications, combined with the years of industrial experience I will have gained alongside them, I will be a highly trained engineer in my chosen field.
Would you recommend apprenticeships to others and why?
I would recommend apprenticeships to anyone who is considering a future path into the engineering sector as the qualifications you will obtain, combined with the experiences you gain along the way, really help you to stand out to other companies and prospective employers.
