Sustainable, carbon neutral wastewater treatment using coconut husk 'wastes' (Ecoflo)

Water sustainability is a global perspective and automatically a key aspect at our recent years that concerns us all. Specifically, the passage of our water resources to our children in as good quality as it was passed to ourselves is our moral promise and obligation to the generations to come.

The increase of the population and the recent rapid urbanization lead to deterioration of the existing water resources. This obliges us to review our water use practices, minimize consumption and treat what is being used (wastewater).

 

Domestic wastewater is typically treated aerobically, in both large municipal and at off-drains applications. This technological approach (forced aeration), regardless its beneficial character has an environmental impact (footprint).

Specifically:

 

  • Domestic wastewater aerobically treated employs technologies that demand energy usage (>0.2 kWh/m3)
  • such technologies contribute to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions increasing by >2% the overall footprint

These two problems can be tackled through the development of products that nullify the demand for energy.

 

In Premier Tech Water & Environment taking advantage of the husk properties (lignin-rich), we introduced a passive aeration, gravity filter (Ecoflo®), filled with raw husk to achieve sustainable wastewater treatment. In this manner we combine the utilization of the ambient oxygen with the typical ‘waste’ streams of coconut agriculture, contributing to the preservation of our water resources as well as to the circular economy by minimizing coconut-based agro-industrial solid wastes.

 

This filter is mainly used to provide solutions for off-drains applications achieving both treatment and disinfection from pathogens.

 

Specifically:

 

Ability to meet the strictest UK treatment discharge consents for COD, BOD5, TSS and NH4-N (62.4, 7.2, 4.0, 4.8 mg/L respectively).

 

  • Ability to effectively reduce pathogenic bacteria, Log2.5-3.0 (~99,9%) inactivation (E. Coli, and other.)

This underlines that Ecoflo’s performance is equally outstanding as what is typically achieved at more complex secondary-treatment aerated systems; and equally, proves  that its disinfection operation is comparable with what is often achieved in sand filters with no employment of advanced equipment (UV irradiation). Finally, its ability to eradicate (by Log8.0; 99.999999%) helminth eggs highlights its potential as a cost-effective sterilization mean for sites where other methods are unattainable (Developing world).

 

The coconut husk internals can be easily and cost-effectively maintained and can last up to 20 years. Its organic nature (lignin), renders husk a substrate rather than a waste, ideal for compost, biogas generation and/or other waste to energy practices.

 

The energy footprint of the plant is 0.0 kWh.m-3, substantially lower than what is observed at other plants that rely on blowers and mechanical rotors (>0.2kWh/m3). Its 50-years life cycle assessment is equal to 15 tons CO2 in comparison with conventional treatment schemes and sand filters with footprints of 19.2 and 37.1 tons of CO2 respectively.

 

Its low CO2 footprint, combined with the ecological benefit (re-use of the agricultural waste) and its’ scope (purify water) support that this product, currently, is one of the most eco-friendly water purification products in the market.
